What is the Green New Deal?

The Green New Deal is a resolution aiming to be passed within our local Madison government to help the environment, economy, and social justice.

Our Madison group is also part of a much bigger movement to make climate change priority in the 2020 election and pass this legislation through the National Government.

Mission Statement

Recent scientific studies show that carbon emissions from our continued reliance on fossil fuels is leading to catastrophic climate disruption.

We hereby call for immediate action to address climate change. The Green New Deal is federal legislation proposing a massive program of investments in clean-energy jobs and infrastructure, meant to transform not just the energy sector, but the entire economy. It is meant both to decarbonize the economy and to make it fairer and more just.

We call upon our local elected officials to endorse federal legislation for a Green New Deal.

The Green New Deal calls upon us to (1) decarbonize the economy, (2) include a federal jobs guarantee and large-scale public investments, and (3) implement a transition that protects low-income communities, communities of color, indigenous communities, and others most affected by climate change, pollution, and other environmental harm.

The Green New Deal is a joined collaboration of the Sunrise Movement and iMatter Youth. It has been gaining lots popularity recently and the legislation was just presented by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Ed Markey.
